An Apple a Day

September 8, 2014

We have all heard the old adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”, but does it really keep the doctor away? You might be surprised to learn how just 1 apple has many health benefits.  There are lots of good reasons to eat those apples every day and KEEP that doctor away!

One apple has 5 grams of soluble fiber. The fiber helps reduce intestinal disorders, including diverticulitis, and possibly some types of cancer. An apple’s pectin (which is found right under the skin on the apple) helps to reduce cholesterol levels and also can help with nausea and diarrhea. Also an apple has only 50-80 calories and has no fat or sodium, they are packed with vitamins C and A, and are a great source of potassium.

To help with eating all those apples, here is a great way to make your very own healthy Applesauce. It is so easy you will never buy a jar of apple sauce again.

Applesauce Recipe Ingredients:

10-15 Peeled and cored Apples or more if you prefer more apple sauce (this will look like a lot of apples before cooking, but remember those apples are going to cook down)

½- ¾ Cup of water

½ teaspoon of cinnamon

Tip: Try to use a mixture of different apple types. I like to use a mixture of Macintosh, because they are sweet, Granny Smith, because they tart and Cortland because they are a hearty baking apple which makes for a nice chunky applesauce which I prefer.

Directions:

Cut the apples in slices or chunks if you want Chunky applesauce, if not then slice very thin.  Put all the cut apples in to a large pot, pour the water over the apples and add the cinnamon.  Mix well and cover the pot and let it simmer on low heat for 45 minutes to an hour.  Check it periodically and stir.  The apples will break down and become this beautiful thick applesauce and the smell is just divine.  Once the sauce is to the consistency you like take it off the heat and let it cool.  Poor into a dish, cover and refrigerate.  You may also freeze it to use at a later date, if you can resist not digging your spoon right in!  This is a family favorite and with September Apple Season upon us I can’t wait to start making mine!
